That's right—the Sultan of Brunei, renowned for commissioning many bespoke and unique projects, is the man behind this extraordinary Lamborghini LM002. After taking delivery of the vehicle, he drove it only once before selling it. But the story of this unique car continues to captivate...

It's easy to see why the Lamborghini LM002, often dubbed the "Rambo Lambo," captured the imagination of car enthusiasts worldwide upon its release. Lamborghini, celebrated for iconic models like the Miura and Countach, had created an all-terrain military vehicle for civilian use, adding a touch of Italian military flair to everyday driving. Its angular design was so distinctive that even early video games could render it accurately, and it featured the Countach’s V12 engine, delivering 450 bhp and accelerating from 0-100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds—a remarkable feat in the 1980s.

Soon after its debut, the Sultan of Brunei, known for his preference for unique vehicles, decided he wanted one for his collection. True to form, he required his Lamborghini LM002 to be unlike any other. After receiving this 1986 model from Singapore Lamborghini, the Sultan commissioned a conversion by Salvatore Diomante, transforming the pickup into a station wagon, hence the official name: LM002 Carrozzeria Diomante. While two other LM002s from the 300-car production run were also converted into wagons, this is the only one officially approved by Lamborghini.

The conversion was meticulous, involving closing off the rear, raising the roof, and adding a U-shaped bench seat to accommodate up to seven passengers, including the driver and front passenger. The interior was upgraded with luxurious features such as air conditioning, electric windows, central locking, a large stereo system, leather seats, a custom dashboard with wood paneling, a DVD player, television, and a sunroof. These modifications added a significant 499 kilograms to the LM002’s already substantial weight, bringing it up to 2,994 kg and likely affecting its 0-100 km/h performance.

Despite acquiring such a rare and unique vehicle, the Sultan of Brunei did not spend much time driving it. Known for maintaining mostly factory-mileage vehicles, he drove the LM002 Wagon just 1,770 km before shipping it to Germany, where it was sold to Bernd Pischetsrieder, former CEO of Volkswagen and BMW.

Under the care of these automotive giants, the LM002 Wagon led a more subdued life, closely aligning with its original intended use. A Swedish woman later bought the vehicle and used it as her daily driver. Whether she was aware that she was driving one of the rarest Lamborghinis is unknown, but it certainly must have impressed her children.

Now nearing 40 years old, the LM002 Wagon remains in good condition but is beginning to show signs of age. The paint, originally Nero and later changed to Argento Metallizzato, is exhibiting bubbling and scuff marks, and the interior has some fading and cracks in the leather seats. Its service history reveals that in 2006, at 4,460 km, major components including the clutch, gearbox, pressure plate, oil lines, and flywheel were replaced at Auto-Konig GmbH in Germany. Recently, the battery was replaced, and the oil and filters were changed. The underside and suspension of this rare Lamborghini appear to be in solid condition.

This LM002 Wagon stands as the rarest of an already exclusive model, with a fascinating history and extensive documentation verifying its authenticity. Unmodified since its conversion, it represents a unique opportunity for any Lamborghini collector to acquire the only officially recognized LM002 Wagon.
